Because time is flying faster than you think.
One of the most common questions I hear as a photographer is:
“How often should we take family pictures?”
And my answer? It depends on your season of life, but here’s the truth—there’s never a “wrong” time to freeze a moment you don’t want to forget.
Let’s break it down, heart-to-heart:
⸻
1. Once a Year is a Beautiful Rhythm
If you can swing it, once a year is the perfect pace to document your family’s growth and connection. Kids grow fast (like, too fast), and yearly photos let you capture those subtle changes—missing teeth, longer legs, new laughs, and deeper bonds.
Plus, you’ll never regret having a full year of memories to look back on.
⸻
2. Milestones Deserve Their Own Moment
In addition to yearly sessions, think about photographing the big stuff:
•New baby on the way
•First birthdays
•Graduations
•Anniversaries
•New homes
•Or even just making it through a tough season together
Milestone photos aren’t just for big “events.” They’re for celebrating the life you’re building, one chapter at a time.
⸻
3. Busy Season? Mini Sessions Are Perfect
If a full session feels overwhelming or hard to budget every year, mini sessions are a wonderful alternative. They’re short, sweet, and designed to get you those updated family portraits without the stress. (I offer a few throughout the year—just reach out!)
⸻
4. The Earlier the Better (For Littles)
For families with babies or toddlers, I always recommend photos more frequently—every 6 months if you can. Babies change in the blink of an eye, and the early years are packed with milestones you’ll want to remember: first steps, first teeth, first giggles. These moments matter.
⸻
5. Don’t Wait for “Perfect”
You don’t need to lose weight, redecorate your house, or wait until your kids are out of their “wild” stage to book a session. (Spoiler: wild is beautiful.) Your real life—the chaos, the connection, the love—it’s worth remembering exactly as it is.
⸻
So… how often should you take family pictures?
As often as you want to remember this season you’re in.
Whether it’s once a year, once a milestone, or just once in a while—it’s always the right time to pause and capture the love that fills your life.
And I’d be honored to help you do it.
With love,
Christin
