How to Have a Successful Photo Session with a Large Family
by Christin Coats Photography
Let’s be honest—planning a photo session with a large family can feel a little… overwhelming. There are schedules to juggle, outfits to coordinate, and the always-present hope that everyone will cooperate just long enough to get that one perfect shot.
But here’s the good news: it can be done—and it can actually be fun.
As a photographer, I’ve worked with families of all sizes, and I’ve learned that the key to a smooth, joy-filled session isn’t perfection—it’s preparation, patience, and a whole lot of love. So if you’re wrangling a big crew for your next family session, here are my best tips to help things go beautifully:
⸻
1. Embrace the Chaos (It’s Part of the Fun!)
When you bring together siblings, cousins, grandparents, and little ones, there will definitely be movement, noise, and maybe a little silliness. But that’s the beauty of it! Some of the most genuine, joy-filled images happen in those in-between moments—so relax and trust that we’ll capture the magic, chaos and all.
⸻
2. Plan Outfits Ahead of Time
Coordinating outfits for a big group doesn’t mean everyone has to match. Instead, pick a color palette (think earth tones, pastels, or neutrals) and let everyone choose outfits that fit within that range. Avoid big logos or bright patterns, and try laying everything out ahead of time to see how it looks together.
Need help choosing a palette? I’m always happy to offer suggestions!
⸻
3. Arrive on Time (or a Little Early)
With larger families, time is everything. Arriving early gives everyone a chance to settle in, fix any last-minute hiccups, and ease into the session without feeling rushed. Especially with little ones or grandparents in the mix, a calm start sets the tone for a smoother experience.
⸻
4. Keep Expectations Realistic (and Focus on Connection)
Not every photo will have every person smiling perfectly—and that’s okay. What matters most is capturing your connection: the hugs, laughter, and love that makes your family yours. Don’t stress the small stuff. A moment of real connection is worth more than a perfect pose.
⸻
5. Let Me Do the Wrangling
Don’t worry about trying to manage everyone during the session—that’s my job! I’ll guide you through groupings, gently prompt natural interaction, and make sure everyone gets their moment. You just get to enjoy being with your people.
⸻
6. Bring Snacks, Water, and Breaks if Needed
Especially for kids (and honestly, adults too!), a little snack or quick water break can be a lifesaver. If we’re going to be out for a while, it’s always good to come prepared so everyone stays happy and energized.
⸻
7. Include Candid Moments
Some of the best images happen when no one’s looking at the camera. I’ll always aim to get a few classic “everyone smiling” shots, but I also love capturing the moments in between—your son making his sister laugh, grandma holding a grandbaby, the way you all naturally come together.
⸻
8. Celebrate the Season You’re In
No matter how big or small your family is, or how wild the little ones may be, this is your season of life—and it’s beautiful. A family session is about celebrating who you are right now, not waiting for the “perfect” moment. So breathe, laugh, and enjoy it.
⸻
Family is everything. And while large family sessions come with a little extra hustle, they also come with big joy, big love, and memories that last forever.
Let’s capture that magic—together.
With love and patience,
Christin
