Because genuine giggles are always the goal
As a photographer, I’ve been in plenty of sessions where parents whisper, “I just hope we get at least one smile.” And as a mom myself—I get it. You’ve dressed everyone up, made it out the door, and now you’re praying your little one cooperates.
The good news? Smiles don’t have to be forced. In fact, the most magical moments happen when kids feel seen, safe, and free to be themselves. Over the years, I’ve picked up a few tricks that work almost every time.
Here are 5 of my favorite ways to get kids to smile naturally during a photo session:
⸻
1. Let Them Be Themselves
Sometimes the best thing we can do is take the pressure off. When we stop asking for a smile and just let kids explore, play, and be their silly selves, those real expressions come out on their own. I’ll often follow their lead—if they want to twirl, collect rocks, or pretend to be superheroes? I’m all in.
⸻
2. Use a Little Gentle Humor
I have a bag of tricks—and yes, that includes terrible animal noises, ridiculous jokes, and a few funny prompts up my sleeve. (Spoiler: I may or may not ask your kid if Dad has stinky feet.) A little silly goes a long way when it comes to unlocking that belly laugh.
⸻
3. Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item
Sometimes a familiar lovey, favorite stuffy, or a small toy can help your child feel more at ease. We might not include it in every photo, but it can make a great memory—especially for little ones who find comfort in those everyday items.
⸻
4. Give Lots of Breaks (and Snacks!)
Let’s be real—kids have short attention spans. So I keep things light, playful, and full of little breaks when needed. A quick snack, a sip of water, or a reset moment can make all the difference. And don’t worry—some of the sweetest photos happen during those breaks.
⸻
5. Trust the Process
Even if it feels like chaos in the moment (hello, toddlers!), I promise—there’s beauty in it. Some of the most heartwarming, joy-filled photos come when you least expect them. Just keep loving on your kids, being present, and I’ll handle the rest.
⸻
The Real Secret? Connection Over Perfection
Your kids don’t need to sit still and smile perfectly. What they do need is a space where they can be themselves, feel safe, and be loved on. That’s where the real magic happens.
And those are the moments I live to capture.
