A Photographer’s Guide

As a photographer, my goal is to make your photoshoot experience smooth, enjoyable, and memorable. Preparing for your session isn’t just about picking the right outfits or getting your hair and makeup done—what you bring to your session can also have a huge impact on the outcome. Whether it’s a family session, a couples shoot, or a senior portrait, being prepared can make the whole experience more enjoyable and help us capture the best possible images.

Here’s a list of what to bring to your photo session to ensure everything goes off without a hitch:

1. The Essentials: Outfits & Accessories

Your outfit is one of the most important parts of your photoshoot, but there are a few extra items that can help make your session run smoothly.

• Extra Clothes & Layers: It’s always a good idea to bring a couple of backup outfits, especially for family or couples sessions. This gives you options in case something gets wrinkled, spilled on, or if the weather changes unexpectedly. Layers like jackets, scarves, or cardigans can add depth and variety to your photos as well.

• Comfortable Shoes: You’ll likely be walking or standing for an extended period, so make sure you bring shoes that are comfortable. If you’re wearing heels for the shoot, consider bringing a pair of flats to walk in between locations.

• Accessories: Hats, scarves, jewelry, and other accessories can add a nice touch and help personalize your look. Just make sure that accessories complement your outfit and aren’t too distracting.

2. Hair and Makeup Touch-Up Kit

Even if you’ve had a professional hair and makeup session before your shoot, it’s always a good idea to have a few touch-up essentials on hand.

• Hairbrush/Comb & Hairspray: If you’re going for a styled look, a quick hair touch-up in between shots can make a big difference. If you’re outside, having a small bottle of hairspray can help control any flyaways or humidity-related issues.

• Makeup: Bring along a few makeup essentials to touch up during the session, like powder for shiny spots, lipstick or lip gloss, and a small mirror. If you’re planning on wearing foundation, a bit of powder can help keep you looking fresh and matte throughout the session.

• Blotting Papers: These are especially useful on warmer days or if you tend to get oily. Blotting papers absorb excess oil without disturbing your makeup.

3. Water and Snacks

A photoshoot can take a bit of time, especially if there are multiple locations or family members involved. Having a water bottle and some snacks on hand can help everyone stay energized and comfortable.

• Water: Staying hydrated is essential, especially if we’re shooting outdoors in warm weather. Having water available is a simple yet effective way to ensure everyone feels good during the session.

• Snacks: If you’re doing a longer session or have little ones with you, bring a few snacks. Simple, non-messy options like granola bars, crackers, or fruit are ideal. Having a quick snack break can help prevent crankiness or low energy, especially for kids.

4. Props and Personal Items

Props can add a personal touch to your photos and help tell your story. Depending on the type of session, consider bringing along items that are meaningful or playful.

• Personal Items for Milestone Sessions: If you’re celebrating a special occasion—like a newborn shoot, engagement session, or anniversary—bring meaningful items such as a baby blanket, engagement ring, or framed photo to add a personal touch.

• Fun Props for Family Sessions: Sometimes a simple prop can make your photos feel more lively. Consider bringing balloons, flowers, or something related to a hobby or activity that’s important to your family.

• Sentimental Items: For example, if you’re doing a family shoot and have a special heirloom or gift that represents your family, this can be a beautiful addition to the shoot.

5. Sunscreen & Bug Repellent

If your shoot is outdoors, especially in the warmer months, it’s always good to come prepared for the elements.

• Sunscreen: If we’re shooting in a sunny location or during peak sunlight hours, be sure to apply sunscreen before the session to prevent sunburn. Don’t forget to bring extra in case you need to reapply.

• Bug Repellent: If we’re shooting in a park or nature setting, especially in the evenings, bugs can be a concern. Having bug repellent on hand will help you stay comfortable, particularly during warmer months.

6. Tissues and Wet Wipes

Sometimes, things like sneezing, allergies, or makeup smudges can happen during a photoshoot. Having tissues or wet wipes on hand ensures you’re ready for anything, from a runny nose to a spilled drink.

• Tissues: For quick fixes and to keep everyone feeling fresh and clean.

• Wet Wipes: Great for cleaning up any accidental spills, especially if you have young kids or are working with a newborn.

7. Inspiration or Reference Images

If you’ve seen a specific style or pose that you love, feel free to bring reference images to help guide the session. This is especially helpful for couples or family sessions when you might have a particular vibe in mind.

• Mood Board: If you have a collection of ideas from Pinterest or magazines, don’t hesitate to share them with me. This helps me understand the look and feel you’re going for.

• Pose Ideas: If there’s a specific pose you’ve seen and love, I can help incorporate it into your session. Just let me know, and we can make it happen!

8. A Positive Attitude

This might be the most important thing to bring! When you’re feeling relaxed, happy, and ready to have fun, it shows in the photos. Don’t worry about getting everything “perfect” — just be yourself and enjoy the moment. I’ll guide you through the process, and together, we’ll capture beautiful, natural images.

Final Thoughts

The key to a successful photo session is preparation! By bringing the right items and taking the time to make sure you’re comfortable, you can help ensure that your photos will turn out beautiful, authentic, and reflective of who you are. So, pack these essentials and come ready to enjoy your shoot, knowing that we’ll capture moments you’ll treasure forever.
