(Even If You Think You’re Awkward!)
Let’s be honest—most people don’t feel like naturals in front of the camera. And you know what? That’s totally okay. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “We’re so awkward in photos!” or “I have no idea what to do with my hands!”
The truth is, you don’t have to be a model or even love being photographed to have beautiful, meaningful photos. My job is to guide you every step of the way—and help you feel confident, comfortable, and (dare I say) have fun during your session.
Here are 10 ways to relax in front of the camera so you can show up as your most beautiful, authentic self:
⸻
1. Choose Comfort Over Perfection
Wear something that makes you feel confident and you. If you’re tugging at your clothes or adjusting straps every five seconds, it’ll show in your photos. Pick outfits that make you feel good, not just ones that look “Pinterest-perfect.”
2. Focus on Each Other (Not Me!)
When I’m photographing couples or families, I’ll often ask you to look at each other, talk, laugh, or even whisper something silly. That’s where the magic happens—when you forget I’m even there.
3. Don’t Worry About Posing—That’s My Job
I’ll guide you through natural prompts and gentle direction, so you’re never left wondering what to do. I’ll help you move, laugh, and interact in ways that feel real, not staged.
4. Practice a Little Ahead of Time
Take a few selfies or stand in front of a mirror with your partner. You don’t need to rehearse, but getting familiar with how you look when you smile or stand together can take the edge off.
5. Breathe (Seriously)
When we get nervous, we tend to hold our breath without realizing it. Take slow, deep breaths. Shake your shoulders out. Loosen your jaw. It makes a huge difference.
6. Think of the Session as a Fun Experience, Not a Performance
You’re not being judged—you’re being celebrated. This is a time to connect with your loved ones, share some laughs, and make memories. Let go of the pressure to be perfect.
7. Play Music Before (or During!) the Shoot
Music can totally shift your mood. On the way to your session or even during it, play your favorite feel-good playlist. If it helps you loosen up and feel more “you,” I’m all for it!
8. Laugh It Out
Seriously—laugh, even if it feels silly at first. Laughter naturally relaxes the body and brings out those genuine smiles. I’ll throw in some silly prompts to help you get there!
9. Bring a Prop or Do an Activity
Whether it’s walking your dog, sipping coffee, or dancing barefoot in a field—having something to dowith your hands or body can make you feel more natural. Let’s build your session around something that feels like home.
10. Trust the Process (and Me)
You don’t have to know what you’re doing. That’s why you hired a professional. I’ve got you. I’ll help you feel seen, celebrated, and confident—and I promise we’ll create something beautiful together.
⸻
You don’t have to be perfect to show up in photos. You just have to be you. And I’ll be right there, capturing the real moments—the smiles, the softness, the little in-between magic.
So take a deep breath, trust the process, and let’s make some beautiful memories.
With all the love,
